Dr. Chandana Basu Mallick is a distinguished Indian scientist specializing in population genetics and human phenotypes. Born in India, she earned her B.Sc. in Microbiology from the University of Delhi and an M.Sc. in Biotechnology from Awadhesh Pratap Singh University. She completed her Ph.D. in Molecular Biology from the University of Tartu, Estonia, where her research focused on the genetic structure of South Asian populations.
Her key areas of research include the demographic history of Himalayan populations, skin pigmentation, and genetic diversity. Her studies have been published in leading international journals such as the American Journal of Human Genetics.
At present, she serves as a scientist at the Centre for Genetic Disorders, Banaras Hindu University (BHU). She has been awarded several prestigious fellowships, including the Ramalingaswami Re-entry Fellowship and the DBT/Wellcome Trust India Alliance Early Career Fellowship. Prof. Gyaneshwer Chaubey is a leading Indian scientist and Professor in the Department of Zoology at Banaras Hindu University (BHU). He is an expert in genomics, ancient DNA, and human evolution. Prof. Chaubey pursued his higher education at reputed international institutions.
One of his most significant contributions has been to disprove the Aryan Invasion Theory—earlier believed to describe large-scale migrations—through DNA evidence. His research, including a landmark 2011 study published in the American Journal of Human Genetics, demonstrated that Indian populations show no significant foreign genetic admixture in the past 60,000 years.
At present, Prof. Chaubey is leading a pioneering study on the DNA of Naga Sadhus during the Mahakumbh 2025. The BHU research team has collected saliva samples from nearly 1,000 Naga ascetics and devotees at the Prayagraj Kumbh. The project aims to explore India’s genetic diversity, migration patterns, and possible genetic factors influencing the choice of renunciation. Alongside, the study is also conducting antibody testing to assess COVID-19 immunity in the Indian population.
Prof. Chaubey’s work has given Indian science global recognition, particularly by challenging the long-debated Aryan–Dravidian divide and highlighting the deep genetic continuity of the Indian subcontinent.
